Veidec Festival, Mantorp Park, Sweden - July/August 2006

29 July 2006 - The rebuild of the main engine was completed overnight, and it was installed into the bike, in preparation for the second day of qualifications.  Obviously, the engine needed to be run reasonably gently for the first pass, with several degrees of timing taken out and the fuelling kept on the rich side.  This gives the engine a chance to get bedded in, and also enables everything to be checked before the wick can be turned back up.  This generated a very satisfactory 7.83/169.27 (without using full throttle!) on a very difficult surface and with terrible air quality which saw all the other riders failing to improve on yesterday's qualifying times.  Hence, still 5th qualifier, but with some scope to improve this afternoon.  Fingers crossed!!
28 July 2006
- Blowing up our main engine in Finland and being unable to complete the rebuild in time for the first day's racing meant that we had to continue with our replacement engine for the first two qualifying passes.  Although this was not ideal, at least it enabled us to get a safe qualifying position at the end of Day 1.
The first pass of the day was made in the left lane, after several street car classes had run.  This meant that there was very little rubber laid down in the launch box.  With there basically being only one very small area to launch from effectively, we managed to launch hard and straight, which was not a feat which was accomplished by all riders.  The combination of a clutch set slightly too aggressively, together with poor air quality (adjusted altitude of 1,300ft) yielded a 7.76/172.57 pass, which put us in 5th qualifying position.  Clearly, the poor air quality impacted everybody, as the number 1 qualifier only managed to achieve a 7.43.
The second pass saw the air quality deteriorate further, giving an adjusted altitude in excess of 1,600ft.  This prevented most of the teams improving their qualifying times, although we did managed to trim our time down to 7.72/172.59, primarily due to better clutch settings (60ft time down from 1.195 to 1.166).  However, this still left us qualified in 5th spot.

Nitro Nationals, Alastaro, Finland - July 2006
2nd July 2006
- The first elimination pass saw us paired against the 3rd qualifier, Anders Larsson.  Not having lane choice meant that we were in the right lane, in which all other competitors in PSB had experienced huge wheelspin all the way from mid-track to the finish.  True to form, we suffered the same fate.  Despite a near-perfect reaction time, and a much-improved clutch setting, the race was lost in the second half of the track, due to the insufficient traction, causing both the ET and speed to be weakened (7.63/173.91).  The margin of victory was just 0.158 seconds.  Next stop...Sweden.
1st July 2006
- After installing a replacement engine, several warm ups were required, as this engine had never even been started.  This also meant that the first passes needed to be sympathetic, to prevent damaging the engine, and also to find the appropriate settings for that motor.  This resulted in the next two passes being virtually identical 7.83/169.58 and 7.79/169.42.  For the final qualification pass, adjustments were made to the wheelie bar, in an attempt to get the launch harder.  This proved successful, but highlighted the fact that the clutch now needed to be set harder, to maximise this alteration.  This last pass was a 7.78/173.54, but the majority of this was due to a poor 60ft time (1.267).  Final qualifying position - 6th.
30th June 2006
- For the first qualifying round, a relaxed setup was dialled into the bike, and Martin rode well, familiarising himself with the bike and the track once again.  This resulted in a third-placed 7.63/176.67.  In the afternoon, a stronger tune was put into the bike, but unfortunately, this just blew the tyre away at the start line.  As the rear wheel hooked up, the middle section of the run was superb, but a loose pickup on the engine caused the timing to be thrown completely, thus blowing the engine.  A busy night lies ahead, changing engines....
Welcome to the first MB Motorsport's first overseas outing of the 2006 season.  Just as last year, the weather at Alastaro is glorious, with clear blue skies and plenty of sunshine.  The stage is set for some excellent racing.
